A Delicious Punishment

School is out for the summer. I have been looking forward to spending time with the kids and having fun together. I decided with seven kids I better be organized with a schedule and routine just to help things run a little smoother. I have a few goals for the kids this summer that I hope will help them learn time management skills, a good work ethic, a love of learning, and a deeper love and respect for each other. We've developed a pretty good schedule that has been working well.

One morning last week the kids and I gathered in the front room. We went over our plans for the day, and my expectations for the day...which was simply be kind and respectful to each other or you would earn yourself an extra chore for the day.

Well....Tyler (who is usually very kind) got frustrated and said some unkind things to his sisters. So he earned himself an extra chore. Tyler announced that he wished he was back in school because so far he wasn't having any fun. Though I think he actually enjoyed his extra job.

For his extra job I asked him to get out his Faith in God book and choose an activity to complete. He chose to plan, prepare, and serve a nutritious meal. SWEET LOVER! This worked out even better for me than I had planned. ;)

Tyler was awesome! He planned and cooked the whole dinner. I was so impressed. I watched to make sure he would remember to set the timer or make sure the oven was on the right temperature but I never had to remind him or correct him he just did perfect. He made corn bread, green beans, and a skillet dish of pasta and chicken. It was a delicious punishment! I could tell he was having fun and was quite proud of himself.

I think I'll assign a "kids cooking night" once a week just for fun!

What a great idea! I think I may need to add Faith in God/Webelos requirements to our summer schedule.

I love your thinking. You are such a good mom to think of 'punishing' him with something gospel related. I'm going to have to remember that. If only my Tyler was older, I'd totally have him make dinner!

I've been told that your not suppose to use the gospel principles as a punishment....although it looks as if it worked in his favor this time. GOOD JOB!!!

Remind me to find the book I've learned some way cool scheduling helpers :)
