January Wrap-Up

Here is January at a glance....
These first two pics are actually on New Years Eve. We took the four oldest kids to see "Savior of the World" at the Conference Center in Salt Lake. It was an awesome night.

Here's Mr. Toddy feeling so cool! He can hold up the ceiling all by himself. He really is so cool!

I almost got to see my friend, Shelly's baby born, but I didn't. He slipped out way too fast. I missed it by 20 minutes. Darn it! Alex arrived only three or four minutes after Shelly got to the hospital, he was lucky not to have been born in the hallway or worse yet, the car. But doesn't Shelly look so good...Alex is about 25 minutes old.

Here's Little D with his good lookin' daddy.

Perched on Dad's head is a popular place to sit around here. Here's Todd during family scriptures. I don't think Ken minded, he got a nice scalp massage in the process.

This is Kaylie representing her class in the school geography bee. Good job, Kaylie!

We added 10 new fishy friends to our family. This tank was a Christmas gift from an awesome family in our neighborhood. It's been fun to be pet owners, we are enjoying our little fishy friends.

These eggs were also given to us by some friends in our ward. I took a picture of them because I had never seen green eggs before. I thought that was just something Dr. Seuss made up. But No, there really are green eggs.

Of course, we had Ty's birthday. Notice he has little helpers all ready to help him blow out the candles. How nice of them!

We took a little trip to Toy's R Us....I never let the kids ride on these rides, but this day I was feeling generous so I whipped out my quarters and divided the kids between the two rides. This picture was taken just moments before Daric fell out and went crashing to the ground. We left the stores with a 1 year old screaming from a head injury and a 2 year old screaming because the ride stopped. It was a lovely experience. Note to Mothers: Save your quarters...it's not worth the drama.

This is me as a brunette. (Please ignore the double chin and just focus your attention on the hair, Thank you!) For the first time in my life I have brown hair on purpose. Maybe you can't tell a difference because I let my roots grow out to a shamefully embarrassing point. But I was ready for a change...next time I think I'll go darker. Baby steps, baby steps.

This is my baby BOY dressed as a baby GIRL, thanks to his sisters. Good times for them, not so much for him.

This is sweet little McKenna -the fashion diva. She was quite serious about her self appointed job of combing out Kaylie's hair. Kaylie was very patient, and McKenna was in heaven.

This is a typical evening at the Robert's home, snuggled around the fire reading together. Ken usually reads (because he's in love with Nancy Drew, -don't worry I'm not threatened) but in this case Sydney is the reader for the evening.

Ah, here's my baby getting ready for his first day of work. Another awesome neighbor (we have lots of those) came over Sunday night before Ken's first day at his new job and gave him all he needed for his first day at work....A new lunch box (complete with lunch packed), a dollar for milk money, Coke for his coffee break, and a teaching manual, 'All I really need to know I learned in Kindergarten'...you know things like play nice, share, no hitting. Great reminders for a first day at work. I am proud to report that Ken did great...he gets a big smiley face for his first day of work. Good job, Baby!

My boys are not the only destruct-doe's in the house. Here are the girls wrestling in my 'non-wrestling room'. Maybe after they're done beating each other up I'll take a whack at them. Ooh, sounds good to me.

Here's another shot of my BOY dressed girly, but this time it wasn't the girls fault. It was mine. I ran out of clean bibs. I put this apron on instead, then I thought he looked so cute I had to make it a memory moment.

Wednesday night (thanks to more neighbors) we were able to take the kids to the circus. It was the kids first time ever. We had a good time watching the tigers, bears, elephants and some amazing performers.
And that wraps up our January at a glance....hope you enjoyed the show!

This is just a random plug for two of my friends that helped us out while Ken was out of work.

First-My friend Janet is awesome. She also has an awesome singing group called 'Music Express'. She allowed my girls to participate in her group last season for FREE, because like I said she is awesome. She is now accepting new students. The cost is $25.00 a month, she offers a discount for siblings. Practices are held at the Scera Shell on Tuesdays from 4:00-5:00pm. Spring season begins in February and all boy and girls ages 5-15 are welcome to join. If you are interested or know someone who is let me know and I'll get you Janet's number. Spread the word...this is a fun group...with a talented teacher. It's also a wonderful way for your little ones to discover or develop their talents or just plain have fun!

Second-I have another awesome friend, Amy Lane. Most of Tyler's birthday gifts and Emma's (next week) were donated by Amy and her family's business. They own "THE LIQUIDATION TEAM"....it is located across the freeway from Trafagla in Orem. They have a big orange sign on their building, check it out next time you pass. The Liquidation Team gets returns from stores like Costco and sells them for a way discounted price. For example....The week before the Superbowl big football fans will rush into Costco, pick out their favorite big screen tv, take it home, watch the Superbowl, then when the Superbowl is over the tv goes back to the store. Surprise, surprise! Well, The Liquidation Team will buy the returns and sell them at around 60% off Costco prices. They have tons of items, with new items coming in every week. They get things from laptops to dog food. It is so worth checking out! I wish I had the address, I don't at the moment...but you can find it off the Center Street exit...on the west side of the freeway. Oh, and tell your friends. People this cool deserve to have success, plus buying cheap stuff is fun for you too!

Stop The Ride...I Want to Get Off!

I wanted to make it through our current trial of unemployment with perfect faith, never doubting. When it was over I wanted to hold my head up high and say...See! I knew the Lord would answer our prayers, I knew everything would be alright.

I failed.

January has been a roller-coaster of emotional ups and downs. Okay, truthfully we've been on a roller-coaster since July, but up until recently I could stomach it. This past weekend I just wanted to scream..."Stop the ride...I want off. I can't do this anymore".

This is the part where I get really honest, sappy, angry...etc. Feel free to stop reading if you want. I write because it helps me process my thoughts. This is mostly a selfish post I suppose...just doing a little self therapy.

Nothing much has changed around here...we are still unemployed and technically doing fine. I should feel blessed and most of the time I do. But this weekend I indulged in a little self pity. More than a little I guess...I think I was wallowing in a big black self pity pit. I guess the excitement/disappointment lifestyle we've been living has finally taken it's toll. Or maybe the Lord just brings you to that breaking point so you can finally be humble enough to listen for a change. I can't be sure of that yet, because I'm still sifting through the ashes of a crash and burn weekend...hence this post. I'm sure there are some eternal words of wisdom and a life altering lesson in the making here. I just have to make wait for the smoke to clear before I can actually see it. Okay, tangent over...

Looking back I can see one thing that changed in January...it was Ken and I. We are typically a pretty blissful couple. We love each other, we love the gospel, and we love our children. That is what our lives center around...love, love, and more love. Well, over that last few weeks we've had a few differences of opinion (I'm not sure why he ever tries that, it never works out well), anyways, with our defences down our little disagreements turned into big irritations. We are usually pretty good about leaning on each other. When one is weak typically the other is strong and vice-versa. It works out good...unless we're both weak at the same time. That's when the crap hits the fan. Which would be good way to describe the last few weeks...just crappy, blah, stupid, icky...you get the point.

Well, Sunday night I finally broke. After weeks of pent up frustration, loneliness, and fear the dam broke. I ended up in a sobbing heap of hysterics on the kitchen floor. It wasn't really one of those good cleansing cries when after it's over you feel refreshed and renewed. No, this was one of those...if I don't stop hyperventilating I'm never gonna live through this...kind of cry. It was the kind that leaves you feeling empty and exhausted. The kind that makes your eyes so puffing and swollen that you want to lock yourself in your room for a day. It was the kind that in between heaving and gasping for air you hear all the lies satan wants you to believe. It was the kind of cry when rational and irrational thoughts fight for dominance. I lost track of time...I have no idea how long I spent on the kitchen floor. Ken was sitting close, probably scared, wondering if I was going to need a straight-jacket.

While I sat on the floor, with a thousand thoughts swirling inside my head, I was hit with one stark reality....I was powerless. I could not change the fate of our family. I could not support our family myself. I could not get a job for Ken any better than he could. I was completely dependant on Ken and my Father in Heaven. It was a place I did not want to be. I didn't want to trust in them. I wanted the power to fix this all by myself. I don't like to need anyone. Needing them made me too vulnerable. People can hurt you when you are vulnerable. I don't like being hurt, or disappointed. Even though my Father in Heaven has never disappointed me, I struggled to let go and hand this fight over to Him.

As for Ken, this may sound strange, but at that moment I was afraid of loving him so much. It seemed to me that depending, needing, and loving some one so much just put me in a dangerous place. Again, I hated the being so vulnerable. In my half irrational mind it seemed safer not to trust him, not to need him. I felt helpless. I realized how much of my self-worth is tied into him. The whole world could be my enemy, but I would be fine as long as he loved me. When we are fighting it's so hard for me to feel loved by him or anyone. Ken wasn't withholding his love from me...in fact...he was right next to me making sure I was going to be okay. So, why couldn't I feel it? This question is actually not rhetorical...if you are still reading...(bless your heart, and sorry about all this)...but really as I sat there on the floor all I could feel was a dark black empty whole in my chest. I couldn't feel my Savior's love, or my Heavenly Father's, or my husbands, or my families, or my friends. Why? My logical self can tell me that I am loved, I have evidence of that all around me. I KNOW it! So why couldn't I FEEL it? All I could feel was a consuming deep emptiness.

Okay, maybe I can answer my own question. I was just thinking...Does satan really have that much power over us? Thinking about it and realized that I didn't just fall apart one night just because. I was holding on to a lot of anger all week. I was avoiding Ken because I wanted to keep being mad. I felt I was justified so I just let my anger fester. I also didn't want to pray. I did pray because I knew I needed Heavenly Father's help, but they were not humble prayers. I wanted the Lord's help without having to do my part. I had let my anger, fear, and pride fester all the way into despair. Satan didn't just have power...I gave it to him! Oh, crud...I get it now.

I think my ramblings are almost over. Things are making a little more sense now. See...I knew talking to myself in cyber-world would help.

One last thought...
Last night during family scriptures we read in 1st Nephi when the Lord commanded Nephi and his brothers to return to Jerusalem to obtain the brass plates. I have read this numerous times but last night I heard it with knew clarity. The Lord gave them a commandment, but he didn't make it easy. He didn't say...go back...knock on the door...tell Laban you need the plates, and he'll hand them over. Oh, no. The only thing that Nephi knew was that the Lord would provide a way...eventually. They were not successful on their first try, or even their second. It was a difficult task they were commanded to do. Finally, after failing and almost losing their lives the Lord delivered Laban into Nephi's hands. Even then it was not easy...Nephi had to learn that sometimes you have to do things you don't want to do in order to bring about something better.

We are counseled to liken all scriptures undo ourselves...so here I go. This is my version of our hypothetical trip to Jerusalem....Ken had a choice at work....he could be the 'company man' and do things that went again his ethics or he could sacrifice his job, but keep his integrity. He did what he knew was the right thing, knowing that it would not be easy, knowing it would bring consequences, but not knowing how it would end. He just trusted in the Lord, that we would be blessed for choosing the right. Being unemployed has not been an easy road. He didn't get the first, second, or hundredth job he's applied for. We've been disappointed, scared, and angry at times. But we've had faith that the Lord would provide a way. Even though my faith wavered for a weekend, I really do believe that in the end (whenever that is) it will all be okay. Maybe even more than okay...sometimes the Lord's blesses us even more than we originally asked. (case in point...we have 7 kids...who would have thought!) Anyway, sometimes we have to do things we don't want to do in order for the Lord to make room for a bigger blessing. I'm not suggesting that we'll have to cut off any one's head. I think in our case we just need to endure to the end.

Okay, I'm feeling better. I'm no longer scared to trust Ken or my Heavenly Father. My faith is renewed and I'm back in for the long haul, however long it takes. Wow! I'm kind-of amazed at the power of words. Not to mention the gift of the Holy Ghost. Whoo! I'm back to feeling like a lucky girl. Thanks for letting me vent. That felt good!

Ty's B-Day

Just wanted to take a sec and wish my big guy a HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Tyler turned 9 years old today. Here are a few pics from the day....
Cake and ice-cream are yet to come. I'm supposed to be downstairs watching Benji with the gang. I faked a potty break so I could have a moment of silence. I didn't want the day to get away before I could blog my traditional birthday post. Must get back! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE YOU, SON!

A Strong Bond

Sometimes my children fight with each other, but boy do they have each others back when someone tries to pick a fight with them.

This post is somewhat vague on purpose, but I just wanted to share a few experiences that left me feeling very proud of my little ones.

A few weeks ago on the way home from school one of the kids friends decided to throw snowballs at the other kids. One of our neighbors got hurt and Kaylie asked the boy to please stop. He didn't want to stop and then threatened Todd with a chunk of ice. Our Kaylie is generally so so sweet, and she handled this situation with maturity...she simply said, "You can hurt me, but I will not let you hurt my siblings". We were very proud of her. Someone must have been looking out for the little boy throwing snowballs because Kaylie also has another side to her. She is fiercely loyal to her family. She has been known to "Rodney King" someone if she has too. She's not afraid of taking a cheap shot to gain the advantage. Glad it didn't have to come to that.

During this same incident at one point threats were made to beat-up one of our kids. Our little 5 year old, Todd, has little fear. Nor does he realize that he is only 5. During the thick of this little kids war zone, in an effort to protect his siblings Todd yells...."You wanna piece of me?"

I wasn't exactly thrilled with this experience, but I was proud that the kids stuck together and defended each other.

Yesterday on the way home from school something more serious happened. No one was hurt, but it left everyone including Ken and I completely shaken. I know that by not sharing the details some of you will be curious, but details aren't important. I just wanted my kids to know that I am so proud of them. They are good. And smart. And kind. And loyal. They love each other, and I love them dearly for it. Thanks kids, for looking out for each other. And remember Mommy and Daddy have always got your back.

Back to the Grind

Today is the first day of a new semester at UVU. It's a mad house down there. This semester I am taking English 2020, and Biology 1010. I forget what Ken is taking ( sorry, dear...I really do listen, I just forgot). Should be fun...and stressful. Bring it on, baby!

BTW-Last semester I pulled an A in Sociology and a B in English. Ken also passed his classes. Progress was made. And guess what....I am no longer a Freshman. I am now officially a Sophomore. Yeah for me! Slowly, but surely....right?
