Don't worry this one has nothing to do with ear wax!
If you read my blog you know that I have been working on being more positive. It seems the more I try the harder it is. But, I may have found a solution.
I recently had an experience where I acknowledge a friend by saying Hi, so-and-so, how's it going? This friend walked right by me and never said a word, never even acknowledge me. I thought to myself; Are you kidding me? How can someone seriously be that rude? Jerk! In the weeks since I have occasionally thought about the incident and become angry. My opinion of this person lessened each time I thought about it, until I decided that I really didn't like this person anymore. But, that negative feeling festering inside me was making me miserable. I didn't really want to not like this person. So I have decided that they must be hard of hearing. Problem solved! I am no longer angry if I just assume they didn't respond because they can't hear. This may seem silly, but it worked for me. Yesterday I was so mad, feeling miserable and angry. Today I don't even care, the anger is gone, and I'm fine.
So, this is my experiment, next time someone ticks me off or hurts my feelings I'm going to make up some reason why they acted like that. Maybe something like....they must have bi-polar, or maybe a brain tumor, maybe someone kicked them in the shins today, or their family pet must have just been run over. That way I can feel sorry for them instead of angry. I think my world is going to get a whole lot easier. I know this is not a new concept it's called "Turning the other cheek" my twist is just a little more fun. Maybe someday I'll be mature enough to just let things go, but for now I'll enjoy this experiment. Maybe YOU should try it too!

My Gratitude Journal - Aug. 4th-10th
Monday: Today has been a rough day physically and emotionally. Ken’s brother Tim and his wife LeAnn went to a doctor’s appt. today. LeAnn is 19 weeks pregnant. Today they found out they have lost the baby. There was no heart beat. Tomorrow she will give birth to a baby she will never be able to rock to sleep at night or raise in this life-time. My heart is breaking for them. Today I have never been more grateful to feel my baby move and kick. What a bitter-sweet reminder of their loss. I am also grateful for my knowledge of the gospel. What a priceless gift, we as members of this church possess.
Tuesday: Today was in the mid-80’s, my air-conditioner kept up and I didn’t feel like I lived in a sauna. I got dressed, did my hair, put on make-up (all things I have no desire to do when I know I’m not leaving the house). I ran errands, and visited Ken at work. I didn’t die of heat and it was enjoyable. I didn’t dread making dinner. I did some visiting teaching, (I love girl talk!), and when I went for a walk with Ken there was a nice breeze. I am so grateful. Today I felt a bit more like myself.
Wednesday: The kids and I drove to Heber, it was so cool, the kids were actually cold. I was loving it. My sister and I when to a cool thrift store. I was able to find some things that I needed, plus Ann loaded me up with great garage sale finds for the girls. I have been so blessed with hand-me-downs this year. I really enjoyed the drive, the company, and the thrill of a good bargain. Other highlights include-I’m almost over this nasty cold, thank goodness! Today I found out that Vol. 3 of a book series I have been waiting for almost two years for is finally out. And I am grateful to spend a quiet night with my hubby. We didn’t have to threaten any of the kids tonight; they all went to bed perfectly. Knock on wood! I am grateful.
Thursday: I found more great thrift store find today at Saver’s. I was looking for jeans and shoes for Ty. I found them! Bargains make me Happy! Every Thursday is mine and Ken's date-night, but we haven’t been able to go out the last two weeks. When we don’t get to go out it stinks, but it also reminds me how very lucky we are to be able go as often as we do. Ken’s wonderful sister Tami comes to ‘Hangout” with the kids, it gives Ken and I a much needed break and quiet time together. She has done this for us for years and I am soooo grateful.
Friday: Today was reading assessment day at school. The kids did a great job, but let’s just say I’m grateful it’s over. Tonight was our ward campout, we went up Hobble Creek Canyon and had a great time visiting with our ward family. Social interaction was just what I needed. We didn’t stay over night; I got to sleep in my own bed. It was lots of fun. I am grateful.
Saturday: After a hot shower and a trip to my flushing toilet we went back up to the ward campout for breakfast. Yummy, and I didn’t have to make it. I got to sit around and visit with the gals from the ward. My kids played and explored with the other kids and I didn’t have to worry about them. It was cool and relaxing up the canyon, and I got to fill my bucket with adult conversation and laughter. That night Ken and I went to some friends to play cards, and laugh some more. I am thankful for good friends and a good babysitter!
Sunday: Sunday’s are never really a day of rest at my house, but it was nice to go to church today. I only had to take Todd out once during sacrament and was able to keep him on our bench until the last five minutes of sacrament. That is actually quite an accomplishment considering he started fighting me during the passing of the sacrament to go sit with his dad. We took our usual Sunday walk around the neighborhood and a drive up to Lehi. It was a nice day. Even though Ken spends most of his Sunday at church we still had lots of time to talk and catch up from the week. I enjoy our quiet Sunday evenings after the kids go to bed. I am grateful for family.
Speaking of family, I just wanted to tell my big brother Craig just how grateful I am for him. He lights up my life! He’s the best. Okay, Craig are you satisfied?
What I’ve learned this week, it’s still easier to complain! I know I am still missing so many of my little blessings in my life like; when the right person calls at the right time with the right thing to say, or the compliment you receive that just makes your day, or at the end of the day when you go in to check on your sleeping children-you look at them and think ‘I am so lucky’, when they go to bed with no arguments and sleep through the night, when your prayers are answered or you feel the comfort or promptings of the Holy Ghost. Those are many of the little things I sometimes fail to recognize throughout my day. Next week I will look harder.

Red Vines or Twislers...the Cont. Saga
The great licorice debate. Well the results are in...Red Vines won hands down. Thank you all, you proved my case! You are all still my friends. Twislers is cherry wax. It's okay if you like cherry wax, as long as you don't consider it 'real' classic licorice.
Unless you grew up on Harney St. in Portland, Oregon this memory will mean nothing to you. But, when I was little we (me & my bro.'s) would cross the busy 72nd St. (for my Orem neighbors it like crossing Main St., we were so tough!) and walk up to the Little League Baseball Park. At the concession stand I would buy a Red Vines licorice rope then watch the game. That was classic America and classic licorice.
Thumbs up to good old fashion Red Vines...sorry Twislers you don't even compare.

Red Vines or Twislers?
This is just a random dumb question, but which do you prefer, Red Vines or Twislers? Ken and I have very different opinions. I am just wondering if he is the only crazy one or if there are more of you out there. I won't tell which one we both prefer...until the time is right. Or until you all prove my case by voting for the correct licorice. Don't be afraid, tell it like it is. We can take it.

Ear Candle...Experiment
A few years ago some friends of ours introduced us to ear candles. The idea is that you take a hollow tapered candle, stick it in your ear then light the candle. The heat from the candle loosens the wax and creates a sucking action that gently removes the wax from your ears. When you are done the fun part is cutting open whats left of the candle and examining the disgusting ear wax. It's kind of a sick game to see who has the grossest ears.

This is what is looks like when you are done. Gross, huh? Well, Ken got curious and did a little experiment. He lit a candle and instead of putting it in an ear he put it in the tip of his finger. The result was exactly the same. We've been duped! The mother load of ear wax we assumed we were extracting from our ears has all been a load of crap! The candle on the left came from my ear, the candle on the right came from Ken's finger. See any difference? Me, either! Moral of the story, do not spend extra money on ear candles, the fun's over, they're a SHAM! Thank you to our 'friends', you know who you are. :)

My Gratitude Journal - July 28th - August 3rd
Monday: At 5:30 p.m. I had to put Todd in a time-out for stomping on his sisters guts. I realized that was the first time all day I had had to put him in time-out. I felt like we were making progress. The whole day had not been a constant battle and he hadn’t hurt anyone until evening. I was grateful! He had to go to time-out two more times that evening, once for throwing a chair at Sydney, and once for telling me to zip my lips. He also told me on his way to his first time out that Dad was going to beat me up when he got home. I found that hilarious and immediately called Ken at work to let him know he was to beat me up when he got home, according to our 3 year old. I don’t know where he got that from, but I was grateful again that even though he wasn’t speaking nicely, I could understand what he had said. It was a whole phrase I had never heard before not just sounds that I had memorized from previous situations. Again progress, I am grateful.
Tuesday: When I woke up on Tuesday morning there were no children in my bed, no children sleeping on the couch or the recliner, no children sprawled in the hallway outside my room. All of my children slept in their own beds all through the night. I slept peacefully until 3:30, then I got up ate some toast to settle a rumbly tummy and read a few chapters in my book. It was quiet and peaceful in the living room, because again all my children were in their own beds. At 5:30 I went back to bed and slept peacefully until 8:30 because my little ones slept in. I was grateful.
Wednesday: Last night my awesome husband went to the store to fulfill my craving for a Heath candybar and a York Peppermint Pattie. I ate the Heath last night, but saved the York for breakfast this morning. Yum, I am grateful for chocolate. We also got a new water heater today so I don’t have to worry about cold showers. That’s a plus! Ken had a great day at work. Business is good. And I ordered Chinese for dinner, not just take-out, I had it delivered-BONUS.
Thursday: I have a hard time sleeping at night, either I can’t get comfortable or I just can’t stop thinking about things. So Thursday morning when Todd crawled into our bed and I realized it was 6:00 a.m. and I hadn’t seen the alarm clock once during the night, I didn’t have to get up to take any potty breaks, I had slept all night! Wow, I was grateful. Then I had a tender hour with Todd, he usually goes to Ken’s side of the bed and snuggles with him. Today he snuggled with me. I knew I wasn’t going to get back to sleep, so we got up and ate breakfast together-Just me and Todd. It was sweet. I was grateful. And I got my hair done! Cut and colored-Yippee! I am grateful.
Friday: Ken and I were able to go to the temple for ward temple night. There were a total of three of us there! But, who cares! We needed to go, we went, and it was great to be there. I was grateful!
Saturday: I had some time to work on a new scrapbook I’m making. Also, we were able to borrow a trailer from a neighbor and D.I. some junk around the house and yard. Yeah! I was grateful.
Sunday: To be honest I am grateful that Sunday is over. I have a head cold and sore throat along with some of the kids. We missed church again this week, which always makes me feel blah. But, on the bright side it was just testimony meeting which in my ward leaves a lot to be desired. Here are the highlights of the day; I finished a book, Ken made dinner, and the house stayed cooler than usual.
This is what I have learned from my gratitude journal this week; it’s a lot easier to complain! I have a ways to go in the gratitude department, so this is going to be good for me. These are the things I learned about myself; I am lot more positive and grateful when I have gotten sleep, however, sleep is hard to come by when your pregnant, you have six kids, and you worry about everything. So somehow I will work on that. I also found that I love those quiet tender moments when life slows down and I can enjoy my children one on one. Even of it is just watching them ride a scooter or eating breakfast together in the morning. I look at the precious little creations they are and realize that I helped creation that masterpiece. They are so much work, but they are even more joy. I am grateful for each of them.
