Runaway 3 Year Old

McKenna loves to go across the street to play with our neighbor's kids. Tuesday she was over playing and was not too happy when I called her back home for lunch. I told her she may go over and play again when she finished her lunch if it was okay with Lindsay. McKenna hurried and gobbled up her lunch and headed back over.

Ken came home for lunch and I got Todd ready for school. On Ken's way back to work he took Todd to school, and I walked across the street to get McKenna for her nap. When I told Lindsay it was time for McKenna's nap she gave me a strange look and said, "McKenna's not here, she came by earlier but I sent her home because I didn't think she had permission to be over". My heart sank, I mumbled something about not seeing her since then (over an hour had passed) and walked home to check the house.

I knew she wasn't at home. She never appeared the whole time Ken was home so I knew unless she fell asleep some where that she was not in the house. I began to panic. I called the only other neighbor I could think she may have gone to. My neighbor replied that she had not seen her, but that she was on her way to help look.

At the point I began to bawl. I knew she wasn't home and I didn't know where else she would be. It had already been much too long since I had seen her and know one had called me, which meant she wasn't with anyone I knew. I was already having an emotional day and the thought of not knowing where my 3 year old was about killing me.

I checked the backyard. It was silent. Then the phone rang. It was the neighbor I had just called. She said, "I have her, she was sitting on my front porch-I'm bringing her home".

RELIEF....but still crying. (I do that a lot lately)

The happy ending at the end of this story is of course, McKenna was safe. AND I got to cry to my friend which is something I needed at that moment.

Man-o-man I do not like those kind of scares.

Those moments are the worst. I remember time like that with my babysister years ago. After about 3 hours we found her asleep on a shelf in the furnace room, we had our food storage in there too....she was asleep on the top shelf. My mom had called the cops and everything. It was when we were preparing for dinner that I found her. My sister later told us that she was playing hide and go seek with her friend, and she hid for a long time. She was around 4 when she did that. Watching my mom freak was so scary for us kids. I've had a similar moment that involved the boys' dad taking Kurt and not returning...but that's another story. I'm glad she was safe, and you got a cry :)
